The Los Angeles Lakers are currently in the middle of searching for their new head coach. After moving on from Darvin Ham after a disappointing end to the season, the franchise is looking at a few different candidates.
While there are a couple of other candidates in addition to JJ Redick, it appears that the Lakers are likely to hire the former NBA sharpshooter and current podcast co-host of LeBron James.
According to a report from NBA insider Chris Haynes, it would be a “surprise” to see the Lakers hire anyone other than Redick to be their next head coach.
“I will be very surprised if their next head coach is anybody but JJ Redick. Everything that I’m hearing is JJ Redick.”
The Lakers have seemingly locked in on their top candidate for the job. Assuming they offer the job to Redick and he accepts it, there will be another huge challenge facing the team this offseason.
LeBron James is set to hit open free agency. Many believe he’ll end up returning to Los Angeles, but there is no guarantee. No one truly knows what is going through James’ head.
Los Angeles will immediately turn their full attention to making sure that they can retain James. Hiring a close friend and current podcast co-host to be their next head coach would be a nice step towards keeping James. However, Bronny James is set to be drafted this year and LeBron could sign with the team that drafts his son.
Outside of the head coaching search and retaining James, the Lakers have to find a way to improve their roster.
D’Angelo Russell is set to hit free agency as well. It seems likely that he will end up leaving Los Angeles. That will leave the Lakers with another void to fill in addition to adding more talent to improve the roster.
Rob Pelinka has his work cut out for him this offseason. It’s going to be a wild offseason for Lakers Nation. Make sure to buckle up.
With that being said, it seems that one item can be crossed off of the offseason list. Redick is likely to become the next head coach for the Los Angeles Lakers. Choosing him is not a surprise, but he’s an unproven coach and it will be interesting to see how that goes next season.
