NBA insider identifies timeline for Luka Doncic and LA Lakers to negotiate new contract

It appears the LA Lakers and Luka Doncic have a framework ready to sign a new contract ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season.

Luka Doncic is doing as much as he can to get ready for the new NBA season. The Los Angeles Lakers point guard will enter his first full year with his new team.

The former All-Star has put in a lot of work so far. Doncic’s body transformation shocked Lakers fans, as the guard has gotten in the best shape of his life.

But away from the fitness aspect, he has also helped the Lakers massively. Doncic helped Deandre Ayton sign with the Lakers.

And after that, Luka recruited Marcus Smart to the Lakers. The Slovenian is ready to compete with the Lakers, thus helping them bring in some much-needed pieces.

However, Luka is yet to extend his Lakers contract, which expires next year. But Lakers fans can rest easy, as one insider believes that the situation will be put to rest very soon.

NBA insider Ary took to X to provide an update about Luka Doncic and his future with the Los Angeles Lakers.

League sources are saying that Luka Doncic will re-sign on either a three or four-year deal, with the potential to earn a $229 million contract, which should be agreed upon this weekend.

“With confidence, league sources tell me: Luka Doncic is expected to sign a long-term extension with the Lakers, likely a 3 or 4-year deal.

“He’s eligible for up to $229M over four years. Sides are largely anticipated to work toward finalizing the agreement this weekend.”

Doncic re-signing has been considered a formality. While he can’t sign a supermax contract because he got traded before his rookie-scale extension, the Lakers want to keep him as long as possible.

Once the Los Angeles Lakers finally sign Luka Doncic, they must realize that they are on the clock to compete.

In all honesty, the Lakers lucked into landing a generational superstar like Luka Doncic. And the fact that they have LeBron James, who is still playing at the highest level, means there are no more excuses.

Doncic’s recruitment drive for the Lakers is proof that he is committed to winning with the team. As such, Rob Pelinka, Jeanie Buss, new owner Mark Walter, and JJ Redick must do their part.

The Lakers are going to have a tough time competing in the Western Conference. There are several strong teams standing in their way.

But if they can maximize both Doncic and LeBron next season, they will be strong contenders for the NBA championship.
