Jonathan Kuminga’s future with the Golden State Warriors continues to generate uncertainty.
Recent reports suggest the Warriors might re-sign the forward only to trade him later, while another scenario involves giving him minutes to showcase his value.
However, indications point to Jonathan Kuminga wanting out of Golden State. The question becomes which team would pursue the 24-year-old forward.
NBA insider Zach Lowe provided an update on the teams reportedly interested in landing Kuminga.
Several franchises have seemingly stepped back from the race, but one previously quiet contender has emerged as the leading candidate.
“I don’t know where the sign and trade is going to be. Miami [Heat] has already made a big trade. I don’t necessarily think that takes them out of a Kuminga thing. I don’t think Washington [Wizards] was ever in,” Lowe explained on his podcast.
“Chicago [Bulls], I just know they’ve got a lot of guys at a similar position including the guy they just drafted. And I think they would be somewhat worried about if we get this guy [Kuminga] in the door, what does that mean for the development of all these other guys?” Lowe noted.
Meanwhile, the Kings have positioned themselves as the most logical destination for Kuminga’s services even though previous report suggested they stepped down.
“Sacramento, I think, is sort of probably the hottest team for him right now, from what I’ve heard,” Lowe added.
This development connects to another Warriors situation involving Al Horford. The veteran center’s potential signing remains stalled, with Lowe suggesting the delay stems from the Kuminga situation.
The Warriors’ pursuit of Horford appears tied to their handling of Kuminga’s future, as they want to make sure the salary cap is in the safe zone.
“I suspect it just has to do with trying to execute something with Kuminga and see what’s left over to pay Al. I suspect it’s a money issue,” Lowe explained.
Kuminga averaged 15.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists while shooting 30.5% from three-point range last season.
His potential suggests room for growth, whether that development occurs in Sacramento or elsewhere outside the Warriors’ system.
