B.J. Penn is going down a dark path.
It’s been painful for UFC fans to watch the decline of one of MMA’s greatest fighters over the past 15 years, both in and out of the cage. The sad end to Penn’s professional career—which saw him go winless in his last eight fights—seems insignificant now compared to the 46-year-old’s troubling personal life.
This past week, Penn was arrested not once, but twice, and his own mother had to file a restraining order against him barring him from being within 100 feet of her. If the reports of Penn’s mental decline are true—he has made several disturbing social media posts accusing his family of being “impostors”—then this is truly a staggering fall from grace for the fan-favorite fighter and a seminal figure in the UFC’s rise to prominence.
For the most part, there has been a wide show of support from the MMA community, many of whom are just hoping that Penn gets some help.

Nate Diaz didn’t think much of Belal Muhammad’s title fight loss at UFC 315, but does anyone think he can really beat the now-former champion? Probably worth noting Diaz hasn’t competed in an MMA fight since 2022.
