Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will surpass Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook with championship win, says Gilbert Arenas

Gilbert Arenas thinks the new MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, could move past Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been named the new MVP of the league. It was an outcome many felt was a formality, but there is no denying the Oklahoma City Thunder superstar deserves it.

This MVP win comes a little under 24 hours after the Thunder won Game 1, where Shai received a lot of criticism for the way he played.

Even NBA commentators took digs at Shai for his simulation antics. But any criticism from the game will wash away now that he has earned the MVP award.

Shai is the third OKC Thunder player to win the MVP in 11 years, matching Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook‘s accomplishment in 2014 and 2017, respectively. But Gilbert Arenas thinks he has a chance to surpass them.

Speaking on his podcast, Gilbert Arenas spoke about Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s legacy as an Oklahoma City Thunder star.

He believes that, should the Thunder go on to win the NBA championship, he will surpass Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook as the greatest Thunder of all time.

“I think with KD, the way it ended, I think they were like ‘Cool, we’ll switch you out.’ F*** KD’s record. I think with Russ, it’s going to be a little better because they loved Russ.”

“If he wins it, I think it’s a high probability because of the championship, he has something no one has. It’s gonna put him right there. He’s gonna be the best player in OKC history.”

There was really very little debate over who deserved the MVP award. Even Giannis Antetokounmpo poked fun at how inevitable his win was.

As incredible as this accomplishment is, Shai and the Thunder cannot get swept away by this achievement.

Right now, they are up 1-0 against the Minnesota Timberwolves. But Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolves claim they know what they need to do next.

Sleeping on Edwards and the Timberwolves is dangerous. Especially because they are more experienced in the conference finals than the Thunder.
