Shannon Sharpe responds to LA Lakers title debate with ‘only reason’ LeBron James comments, ‘I promise…’

Recent conversations have emerged about the Los Angeles Lakers’ 2020 championship legitimacy.

The debate started when Philadelphia 76ers President Daryl Morey claimed the Lakers’ championship shouldn’t be considered legitimate.

The 2019-20 NBA season faced unprecedented disruption due to COVID-19, ending in a bubble environment in Orlando, Florida.

The unusual circumstances and different playing conditions have created ongoing debates within the NBA community about that championship’s validity.

However, NBA analyst Shannon Sharpe believes the only reason this championship faces scrutiny is because LeBron James was the one who won it.

Sharpe argues that any other superstar winning under identical circumstances wouldn’t face the same criticism.

The analyst made a direct connection between the championship criticism and LeBron’s involvement, suggesting bias drives the legitimacy questions rather than genuine concerns about the bubble format.

“Let me tell you why, because LeBron James won it. Anybody, any other superstar had a won that championship, you and I both know, it was because LeBron James won it [that] it ‘ain’t legit,’” Sharpe explained.

Sharpe believes LeBron faces disproportionate criticism throughout his career, with critics constantly seeking ways to diminish his achievements regardless of their merit.

“I promise you, nobody in the history of the game has received more criticism than LeBron James. It’s crazy. No matter what you thought he might be, he’s exceeded all expectations,” he added.

The analyst redirected criticism toward Morey, suggesting the Philadelphia 76ers executive should focus on improving his own team rather than questioning other franchises’ championships.

Sharpe pointed out Philadelphia’s disappointing performance last season, when they failed to make the playoffs despite having a talented roster.

“You need to worry about Philly. Pull another season like you had this year and see what happens to you,” Sharpe directed at Morey.

Throughout his career, LeBron has won four championships across three different franchises. The 2020 title represents his only championship with the Lakers, adding to two with Miami and one with Cleveland.

LeBron earned Finals MVP honors in every championship he’s won, including the contested 2020 bubble title. Despite his consistent excellence, criticism of that specific championship persists among certain NBA observers.

The ongoing debate suggests LeBron may need another Lakers championship to silence critics completely. Next season provides an opportunity for that redemption with an improved roster.

The Lakers made significant offseason moves that could position them for championship contention, led by LeBron alongside more physically fit Luka Doncic.

The team also added DeAndre Ayton as their new starting center and veteran guard Marcus Smart to strengthen their roster depth. These additions address previous weaknesses while maintaining their core talent.

The opportunity exists for another championship run, though they must compete in the highly competitive Western Conference. Success would eliminate any remaining questions about the legitimacy of their previous title.
