The Golden State Warriors secured a headline-grabbing win over the Boston Celtics at TD Garden.
Two teams who expect to go far in the 2024-25 playoffs clashed in midweek, with Golden State Warriors winning 118-112 at Boston Celtics.
Celtics fans expressed upset with Warriors coach Steve Kerr for his treatment of Jayson Tatum during the Olympics, but it was the visitor who had the last laugh.
Stephen Curry produced a vintage performance, leading the Warriors with 27 points. But it was not easy for Golden State, who now move to 7-1, with the Celtics falling to 7-2.
During the game, Steve Kerr was seen shouting at star player Stephen Curry after a turnover gave possession to the Celtics in the second quarter.
There have been times on other teams when coaches are afraid to berate the superstars. That’s not the dynamic on the Warriors.
Curry says he sees no issue with Kerr’s approach and encourages it, especially when he knows it was justified. He told NBCS: “It’s a mindset, that one, I want to be coached just like everybody else.
“So I don’t get sensitive about it. Particularly when they took three on the other end, it’s avoidable. And we have to be able to take care of possessions, especially against good teams.”
Curry also implied that it worked: “I didn’t have another turnover after that which was nice. It’s just a mindset that everybody has to be committed to.
“Me and Draymond are going to have turnovers, we have the ball in our hands a lot, we try to take some chances here and there.”
Steve Kerr spoke at his press conference and echoed Curry’s comments, that he needs to be able to be direct with his players.
He said: “The beauty of Steph is I can yell at him. He lets me yell at him, which sets the tone for the rest of the team.
“I yelled at him, it was a five-point swing, they came down and hit a three, and he accepted it, and he knew it.
“This is a theme for our team, we can’t be the same team we were five or six years ago and give away possessions in the name of creating chaos, everybody else is playing fast and shooting threes too.”
Kerr’s comments speak to the fact that Golden State were once the innovators, and now the rest of the NBA has caught up.
They are still among the top teams in the Western Conference, but the Warriors will have to work harder and smarter if they are going to return to the finals again.
