Stephen Curry delivered a special Queen City annual homecoming with a bang.
On March 3, the superstar guard seized the opportunity of playing in front of his hometown folks, leading the Golden State Warriors to a 119-103 victory against the Charlotte Hornets.
Following their rough road loss in Philadelphia against the 76ers which saw an explosion from Quentin Grimes, Stephen Curry took charge in guiding the Dubs’ bounce-back game, dropping a double-double performance of 21 points and 10 assists.
He went 6-of-14 from the field and made three three-pointers from beyond the arc.
Playing against the Hornets in Charlotte couldn’t be more priceless from Curry’s perspective.
Of the 19,223 fans in attendance in the Spectrum Center, several key people associated with Curry made their appearance from his family, friends, collegiate roots in Davidson, as well as the beneficiaries of his foundation.
His father Dell was covering the game as part of the Hornets’ local television crew. And on the other side of the court is his younger brother Seth.
In his postgame interview, Curry fondly reflected how special it has been to return to Charlotte.
“All of that just fills my cup up for sure,” he said. “Just being back home and seeing all familiar faces, people that have been part of the journey from the jump. We had the Davidson contingency, coach [Bob McKillop].
“They had the Curry scholars, the female athletes that have been a part of an opportunity we created from the scholarship to allow them to go to Davidson and play all the non-basketball sports.
“It’s cool to see them on the sidelines and my family, too. So you get one top here every year, you make the most of it.”
If there’s another team that Curry wouldn’t hesitate supporting outside of the Warriors, the simple choice is none other than the Hornets.
Alongside his brother, Curry himself saw his father lace it up as a member of the Hornets back in the day. Although he bleeds blue and gold, that still won’t change his support towards Charlotte.
The Hornets have endured yet another chaotic campaign this 2024-25 season. Despite new organizational changes from the ownership, front office, and head coaching leadership, struggles persisted at their side as they’ve been the No. 14 team in the Eastern Conference standings (14-46).
Beyond losses, the Hornets have faced drama and outside noise from a failed trade transaction and now speculations surrounding their franchise cornerstone LaMelo Ball.
Curry simply wishes nothing but the best for the Hornets as they move forward in this forgettable season.
“Deep down, I’m always rooting for the Hornets, the Panthers, to see Charlotte get excited, have something to look forward to and rally around,” he said.
“I think going into the year, they had high hopes. And I know injuries have been kind of tough. They have some guys and talent, they got perspective of how they want to build — obviously new ownership.
“So I’m hoping that they can turn it around for sure. The city deserves it, for sure.”
