A potential trade idea has been put forward by former NBA star Paul Pierce, who believes it would ‘break the league’.
The Milwaukee Bucks have had a disappointing start to the season, and sit 2-7 after a 114-96 beatdown against the New York Knicks.
It demonstrates how their win over the Utah Jazz was not worth reading too much into, with Doc Rivers’ team in a lot of trouble.
The Bucks have no plans right now to trade away superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, even though he made comments which set the speculation moving.
Speaking on the KG Certified podcast, 2008 NBA champion Paul Pierce spoke about the predicament the Milwaukee Bucks find themselves in, if Giannis becomes restless.
He explained: “If you get to the point where you hear rumbles Giannis might request trade or this and that, you are going to have to look.
“Look at the age of Dame [Lillard], he getting up there in age, [Khris] Middleton, his career ain’t ever going to be the same, he ain’t going to be the Middleton that won you the championship.
“If I’m the owner now, we are going to have to cut our losses, if Giannis is out here demanding a trade.”
Pierce went onto explain that the team he believes have the assets to trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo, is the Oklahoma City Thunder, currently 8-1.
He said: “This will break the league if this happens, if you could find a way to get Giannis to OKC.
“You know why, this is how I say that – they have got all the draft picks, they have got young talent, you could trade for him.
“Nobody could give you assets OKC could give you, the assets OKC could give you. They could get the Clippers pick this year, they’ve got about 25 first round picks, they’ve got young boys.”
He speculated OKC could throw out around five of those first round picks into a trade, adding that they should do what is needed to pair Antetokounmpo with rising star Chet Holmgren.
“If you could get Giannis with Chet for the next five years. I got to make that move.
“This team is built to win right now. If I want to get to a physical conference final… I need Giannis right now, we built to get it all right now with Chet, whose a MVP calibre player.
“Giannis… he’s got a six-year window, and OKC fit that.”
Co-host and former teammate Kevin Garnett did not agree, and believes the Thunder should continue to stockpile their picks.
He argued: “This ____ ain’t broke, I like what OKC is doing, they going to have to grow up at some point, make these strides.”
He also pointed out that the future picks may not be too useful to the Bucks, adding: “There ain’t nobody in the future other than Cooper [Flagg] than could come out and fill that.
“You take Giannis out of there you set your franchise back four years.”
