Three teams who should trade for Jonathan Kuminga and take a chance on Warriors star

Jonathan Kuminga’s tenure with the Golden State Warriors has been a rollercoaster of promise and inconsistency.

The restricted free agent’s future with the team remains uncertain, especially given the Warriors’ financial constraints and evolving roster dynamics.

However, one expectation appears clear: the Warriors won’t let Jonathan Kuminga walk away for nothing. The organization will likely explore sign-and-trade scenarios to acquire assets while moving him elsewhere.

Kuminga possesses undeniable potential, showing flashes of being a strong scorer who loves attacking the rim.

Despite struggling to fit Steve Kerr’s system and facing reduced opportunities since Jimmy Butler joined the team, several destinations make sense for the 22-year-old forward.

The Chicago Bulls and Nikola Vucevic could both do with a fresh start, making a sign-and-trade scenario involving Kuminga logical for both sides.

The Warriors need a center who can stretch the floor, shoot effectively, and facilitate offense. Vucevic possesses those attributes, having averaged 18.5 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game last season while shooting 40.2% from three-point range.

Though he has defensive vulnerabilities, playing alongside Draymond Green and Butler should minimize those concerns.

For Chicago, Kuminga would provide the physicality and directness missing from their current roster centered around Coby White and Josh Giddey.

His above-the-rim athleticism makes him an ideal lob target for Giddey, while his skill set could fill a role similar to DeMar DeRozan’s previous impact.

This could also be another sign-and-trade scenario, in which the Warriors would get another big in exchange for Kuminga. The Brooklyn Nets might not have an All-Star-caliber center, but they have Cam Johnson.

Acquiring Kuminga would align with the Nets’ rebuilding efforts. At 22 years old, Kuminga brings athleticism and potential that could be cultivated in the Nets’ system. Increased playing time and a defined role could accelerate his development, providing the Nets with a promising asset for the future.

Conversely, the Warriors would gain a reliable three-and-D player in Johnson. His 39% three-point shooting percentage and defensive versatility would make him a valuable addition to Golden State’s roster, complementing their existing core and offensive schemes.

His experience and skill set could address some of the Warriors’ current needs and allow him to contribute immediately.

While salary cap considerations and contract details would need to be addressed, this trade scenario enables both teams to align their rosters with their short- and long-term objectives.

Phoenix Suns represent the most intriguing possibility through a Kevin Durant reunion scenario, though it would require the Warriors to surrender more than just Kuminga.

Golden State could offer multiple first-round picks, Kuminga on a new contract, salary filler, and promising young players like Brandin Podziemski or Moses Moody.

Durant is strongly expected to be traded. Phoenix might seriously consider that package given Durant’s age (37 in September), injury history, and inability to prevent last season’s disappointment. Having a young core with Kuminga and Podziemski is a good idea for rebuild.

Despite the fact that the Warriors could lose many assets, having a team that includes Stephen Curry, Green, Butler, and Durant sounds like it could still be championship caliber.
