Tim Kawakami clarifies claim on Jonathan Kuminga’s latest status with the Golden State Warriors

Jonathan Kuminga’s future has more or less been decided after a draining offseason.

The Golden State Warriors essentially gave up on Jonathan Kuminga during the 2024-25 NBA season, partly due to the arrival of Jimmy Butler.

Even with Butler taking the starting role on the roster, one would assume that the former seventh overall pick would at least earn a crucial bench role on the Dubs.

However, head coach Steve Kerr squashed those hopes when he briefly took Kuminga out of the rotation. Evidently, Kuminga was expected to part ways with the team this offseason, but there has hardly been any development on that front either.

Considering the Warriors haven’t made even a single move this offseason, resolving the Kuminga saga must be the team’s first priority.

Since no trade has been finalized yet, it would be safe to assume that the Warriors have given up on parting ways with the 22-year-old. NBA insider Tim Kawakami confirmed that in a recent tweet on X.

“The Warriors unenthusiastically engaged in a few sign-and-trade discussions, but a source says they’re now out on those talks and that Jonathan Kuminga will be on the team this season,” he wrote.

Although Kuminga is talented, does it mean that the Warriors are willing to take the risk of keeping a disgruntled star on the roster? After all, Kuminga rejected the Dubs’ recent contract offer.

While it’s a pretty straightforward report, some may misinterpret the exact meaning behind it. That’s why Kawakami made sure to clarify that a Kuminga trade isn’t impossible.

“I know 90% of readers understand what I reported in this column — that the Warriors are SAYING they won’t trade Kuminga this summer.

“But to clarify some of the aggregation … I’m not reporting that a trade is impossible. What I’m reporting is the GSWs’ position now,” Kawakami said.

Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game last season, but if given a good opportunity, the 22-year-old could possibly surpass these numbers.
