Tim Legler has revealed that a star player on the Washington Wizards has a shot to win an important award in the 2025-26 season.
The Washington Wizards made some big changes to their roster in the offseason, adding players like CJ McCollum and Cam Whitmore.
They also completed a contract buyout with Marcus Smart, which gives them some more room to operate in the market.
They have some talented young players like Alex Sarr and Bilal Coulibaly on the roster, but were able to add another star in Tre Johnson by drafting him sixth overall in the 2025 NBA Draft.
He showcased his brilliance in the Summer League and after watching glimpses of him, Tim Legler has made a big prediction about his future with the Wizards.
The 2025 Draft Class is loaded with talents like Johnson, Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, VJ Edgecombe and Ace Bailey.
Among all of these names, Johnson is a player that has showcased his abilities to be a pure scorer and Legler believes that will give him a push in the Rookie of the Year race.
He said: “I will make one quick prediction on them. I think Tre Johnson will be first team All-Rookie, and I think he has a shot at Rookie of the Year.
“It’s just because he’s just an absolute natural scorer. Nothing about his game looks like it’s happening too fast for him. He knows exactly what he wants to do, and he’s got every single platform down in his scoring book.
“I just think he’s going to put up numbers, and they’re going to need him to and they’re going to, they should throw him out there, man, let the guy play a lot of minutes.”

Legler stated that rookies like Flagg and Harper are going to be contenders for the prestigious award, but Johnson’s scoring ability and minutes on the Wizards will give him the edge.
“I think the minutes are going to happen quickly for him, and I think he’s going to put up numbers. Now, it might not be enough on a bad team, even putting up gaudy numbers to win Rookie of the Year.
“You got some great candidates. I think Harper’s a great candidate. I think Cooper Flagg, but I just think this guy, this guy scores, unlike anybody that I’ve seen in this class,” the former NBA player added.
The Wizards have not been a good team since the likes of John Wall and Bradley Beal left the franchise.
They have struggled to attract talent and seem to languish at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
However, after a few years of disappointing results, it looks like the front office is actually making moves to turn things around.
Drafting Johnson is certainly a step in the right direction, as he adds something they do not have on the roster: scoring.
Position | Player Name |
Point Guard | CJ McCollum |
Shooting Guard | Tre Johnson |
Small Forward | Cam Whitmore |
Power Forward | Khris Middleton |
Center | Alex Sarr |
He was brilliant in the NCAA tournament for Texas and showed early signs of brilliance in the Summer League.
Johnson revealed the team needed him to defend, but he is probably one of the most pure scorers the franchise has had since Beal.
If they allow him to play freely, the Wizards could become an entertaining team to watch next season.
