The Brooklyn Nets showed they are not dependent on Cam Thomas as they rose up to defeat the Phoenix Suns without him.
Did the Brooklyn Nets have a special point to prove to Kevin Durant? Or are they simply that good?
The rapidly improving Eastern Conference team showed they don’t need to trade for a superstar, they are forging an impressive young team as it is.
Tyrese Martin dropped a career-high 30 points on the Phoenix Suns in a 127-117 win, achieved without injured star Cam Thomas.
Another player who stepped up with his best ever Nets performance was Trendon Watford.
Trendon Watford spoke to reporters in the post-game press conference and talked up his coach Jordi Gomez.
He expressed that the Nets’ high-scoring came from the confidence and encouragement Gomez gives to the players, and relayed a personal conversation they had before the game.
Watford, who previously played for the Portland Trail Blazers, explained: “I’ve had four coaches in the league, and I don’t think there’s a coach that tells us to shoot as much as him.
“He came to me before the game and said he wanted me to shoot 10 threes.
Watford then added, with a smile: “I let him down, I only shot six.”
The power forward came off the bench to score 18 points. This was his highest in a Brooklyn Nets uniform.
Watford went only 2-6 on his three-point attempts, which probably explains why he did not push towards the 10 Gomez initially encouraged.
He went 6-13 on field goals and 4-4 on free-throws. Watford also had 2 rebounds and 3 assists.
Watford’s career-high is 27 scored for the Trail Blazers against the Wizards in 2022. This was the fourth highest-scoring game of his career.
Brooklyn are up to 9-10 for the season and face the in-form Orlando Magic up next.
