Tyler Herro is loving his time with the Miami Heat this season but it all could have been very different for the All-Star hopeful.
While the Heat have had an inconsistent season Herro has been the guy they turn to when they need a job doing.
Herro’s form has impressed many and some have called for him to get his maiden All-Star spot, something that he dreams of.
The 24-year-old’s starring displays have been even more important this season given the unrest caused by the Jimmy Butler trade drama.
Heat fans will be thankful for their star playmaker but Herro recently revealed how his career could have been very different.
It wouldn’t be worth thinking about where the Heat would be this season if they didn’t possess the star quality of Herro.
The 2022 NBA Sixth Man of the Year is reaching new levels up and down the court averaging a career-high 23.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5 assists.
Herro dreams of bringing a championship to Miami but he very nearly missed out on playing for the team he so loves.
Speaking on The OGS Podcast Herro revealed how he nearly ended up a Boston Celtics player on draft night, saying: ” When I see the numbers on the teams of where they’re drafting and I see Miami was 13, I was set on Miami, it was like a dream to go to Miami.
“On draft night the Celtics had the 14th pick and they had already guaranteed me the pick for the most part and then Miami took me right before at 13 and it was a blessing.”
After narrowly missing out on Herro, who would have been a perfect fit for the team given his 3-point shooting ability, which this season sits at 40.1%, a career-high, they landed on Romeo Langford.
Langford’s rookie season with the Celtics ended almost before it had begun when he was ruled out for the entire season in September 2020 after having wrist surgery.
In his sophomore season, he continued to be a semi-constant rotation player and despite scoring a playoff career-high 17 points against the Brooklyn Nets found himself traded to the Spurs the next season.
He would spend just one year with the Spurs before moving to the Utah Jazz where he was quickly waived by the team. He went on to spend time with the Salt Lake City Stars and is now playing in France for BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque.
The Celtics certainly ended up with a rotten draft deal, Herro however is thriving in Miami and will look to continue his brilliant form this season.
