Ravindra Jadeja Provided First Breakthrough for India in First Innings
Australian skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and chose to bat first. Sam Konstas entertained the Melbourne crowd with an aggressive style of batting. The 19-year-old reached a maiden Test half-century in just 52 balls, but his knock came to an end when he was dismissed by spinner Ravindra Jadeja.
After Konstas’ dismissal, Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne added a 65-run stand for the second wicket. Khawaja reached his first half-century in the series off 101 balls. However, the southpaw was dismissed after mistiming a half-tracker from Bumrah and edging the ball to mid-wicket for 57.

Labuschagne and Steve Smith formed an 83-run stand for the third wicket, putting Australia in a strong position. However, Labuschagne’s aggressive approach led to his downfall as he became Washington Sundar’s first victim of the Boxing Day Test. He was caught at mid-off after scoring 72 runs.
Bumrah struck again in the following over, dismissing Travis Head for a duck. Head left a delivery that crashed into the top of the off stump. Mitchell Marsh was dismissed for 4 runs after edging to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. Australia lost three wickets for 9 runs in 24 balls, allowing India to regain momentum.
Smith and wicketkeeper Alex Carey formed a 53-run stand for the sixth wicket. India struggled with some fielding errors, and Bumrah had to briefly leave the field for treatment for a potential calf issue. However, the second new ball worked in India’s favor, as Carey was dismissed for 31 by Akesh Deep.
