One of the biggest talking points across the NBA this season has been the unhappiness with the frequency of three point shooting.
Amid the discussion over the gradually declining NBA ratings, a reason frequently cited as reason for this is the way the game has changed.
The perspectives often come from former NBA stars, with Charles Barkley among the outspoken critics, clashing with LA Lakers head coach JJ Redick.
It’s a talking point that does not look like going away either, with latest to chip in being former Houston Rockets star Cuttino Mobley.
Cuttino Mobley spoke to Byron Scott on the Fast Break YouTube channel, and picked out the highest scoring three-point shooter in the NBA, Anthony Edwards.
Anthony Edwards was recently urged by Vince Carter to get into the paint more, and Mobley cannot understand why he takes so many threes.
Mobley said: “Anthony Edwards takes four more threes a game this year and averages two more points. “You tell me where that’s math-ing at. It just don’t make sense.”
He also took a shot at Boston Celtics star Derrick White, who he admires – but doesn’t know why he is given the freedom he is.
“I love Derrick White and I think he’s amazing, but my role player, if I pass it one time and you shooting that thing – give it back! I don’t need you shooting.
“You’re role guys getting 17 shots up, 15 shots up – what day is this?!”
White was recently praised by his Boston Celtics teammate for his role in the win over the Dallas Mavericks. It’s clear they appreciate what he does. He had 16 shots in that one.
Mobley’s disdain for the way the game of basketball is played today came through with his assessment of who would win a match-up between the generations.
He played in the NBA between 1998 and 2008 and he believes players from that era would comfortable beat the 2024-25 players.
Mobley claimed: “If I was playing now, if I take five of us from back in the early 2000s, say B Scott is coaching us. We would smash them.
“You’re not taking a lot of threes, we’re sucking in, and we’re posting you up, and we’re coming at you every chance we get.
“Down low, we’re killing your legs. You’re getting posted up all day long, we’re slowing this game down.”
