What It Means For Their Rebuild

As the Charlotte Hornets prepare for the 2024-25 NBA season, they’ve been hit with a significant setback: starting center Mark Williams will miss training camp due to a strained tendon in his left foot.

Williams, who suffered the injury during an offseason workout, is expected to be re-evaluated in two weeks, leaving his availability for the start of the season in doubt. This injury news adds further uncertainty to a Hornets team already undergoing several roster changes in a rebuilding year.

In addition to Williams’ injury, the Hornets have been active in the trade market. In a recent three-team deal, Charlotte acquired forward DaQuan Jeffries from the New York Knicks. The trade sent Jeffries and draft compensation to the Hornets, with Karl-Anthony Towns heading to New York and Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo going to Minnesota.

While Jeffries is not expected to be a major contributor to Charlotte’s rotation, the move provides additional flexibility as the team looks to develop its young core.

The Hornets were already facing significant challenges entering the season, and Williams’ injury compounds the situation. The 7-foot center was projected to be the team’s defensive anchor, building on his 12.7 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks per game from last season. His absence leaves a hole in the middle of the lineup, which will likely force the Hornets to rely on backup big men or adjust their strategy in the paint during preseason games.

On top of Williams’ injury, the Hornets’ offseason was marked by several key transactions. They re-signed Miles Bridges and added veterans like Seth Curry and Taj Gibson, while also bringing in Josh Green via trade and rookies Tidjane Salaun and KJ Simpson through the draft. The front office, under new management led by Gabe Plotkin and Rick Schnall, has focused on developing young talent and improving decision-making after years of missed playoff opportunities.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Mark Williams, Charlotte Hornets Updates

The acquisition of Jeffries, a 27-year-old forward, is primarily seen as a salary filler in the larger deal involving Towns, Randle, and DiVincenzo. Jeffries averaged just 2.7 minutes across 17 games last season, and his role in Charlotte is expected to be minimal. However, this trade underscores the Hornets’ ongoing efforts to stay flexible while focusing on building for the future.

With new head coach Charles Lee at the helm, the Hornets were already facing an uphill battle to break their eight-year playoff drought. LaMelo Ball, the team’s sole former All-Star, will need to stay healthy after missing most of last season with an ankle injury.

Brandon Miller, coming off a strong All-Rookie campaign, is expected to take on an even larger role as a primary scoring option. But without Williams to anchor the defense, the team’s interior could struggle, especially in the early games.

Jeffries’ addition won’t have a major impact on the Hornets’ immediate rotation, but the focus for the team will be on player development and adjusting their game plan around Ball, Miller, and Bridges. While expectations for a playoff run remain low, Charlotte’s future hinges on how quickly these young players can develop and whether Williams can recover fully to become the defensive force the team needs.

NBA NEWS & RUMORS: Mark Williams, Charlotte Hornets Updates

The Hornets are set to open their preseason on October 6 against the New York Knicks, but all eyes will be on Williams’ recovery timeline and how his absence affects the team’s ability to build chemistry before the regular season begins.
