The future of De’Aaron Fox looks set to be away from the Sacramento Kings but his exit could cause a major knock-on effect to the team.
Sacramento appeared to be getting things back on track on the court following the exit of Mike Brown, however, it now appears a rebuild could be on the cards.
The Kings currently sit 10th in the Western Conference with a 24-23 record but the exit of Fox will be a major loss, he scored 19 points with eight rebounds and five assists in the team’s recent 117-104 defeat to a resurgent Philadelphia 76ers.
With the San Antonio Spurs looking a likely destination for Fox, his exit may cause DeMar DeRozan to reconsider his future.
At the age of 35 DeRozan is still putting up solid numbers regularly for the Kings.
The six-time NBA All-Star recently proved that he is still clutch in the big moments when helping the team defeat the Miami Heat in overtime, he scored nine overtime points.
DeRozan moved to the Kings from the Chicago Bulls where he averaged 24 points, 4.3 rebounds and 5.3 assists in his final season. He also finished second to Stephen Curry in voting for the NBA’s Kia Clutch Player of the Year voting.
The guard was excited to join a team alongside Fox, All-Star center Domantas Sabonis and promising young forward Keegan Murray.
While he appears to have found some solid form in Sacramento, which has seen him regularly drop 20+ point games under Doug Christie the potential exit of Fox has seen DeRozan question his own future with the side.
Speaking on Fan Duels Run It Back, he said: “It’s tough, looking at the landscape before I came those were the guys I spoke to, Fox, Domas [Sabonis] and Malik [Monk], they were guys that made it easy for my decision to play here.
“A key player in Fox not knowing the future does make it tough. I don’t have much time left, I’m not trying to play another five years we have to try and maximise the time we have now to play with a great team.
“You never know when dominoes fall the wrong way at an organization, it’s something we’ve got to wait out and see and make the most of it, we’ll see how it pans out.”
Not only are DeRozan and Fox the team’s key playmakers but they’re also the clutch players that you want on the ball when times are tough.
DeRozan has been a clinical point scorer in his NBA career and recently passed Allen Iverson’s points total of 24,368.
De’Aaron Fox | DeMar DeRozan | |
Points | 25.1 | 21.6 |
Rebounds | 5.0 | 3.6 |
Assists | 6.2 | 3.8 |
The numbers don’t lie and the Kings would have a tough task in replacing both of their stars.
With DeRozan now visibly getting cold feet in Sacramento it’s key that the organization bring in some quality in any deal that would see Fox leave.
Their incomings could prove crucial to whether or not they can keep hold of DeRozan long-term.
