Why Trae Young does not have to be No. 1 option for Atlanta Hawks, explains Dominique Wilkins

Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins offered crucial advice about how Trae Young should be used by the organization.

The 2024-25 NBA season marked the seventh year that the Trae Young-led Atlanta Hawks failed to leave a good impression on fans.

In the last seven seasons, the Hawks have advanced to the playoffs just thrice, facing two first-round exits and one Eastern Conference Finals elimination.

Keeping that in mind, it’s no surprise that many are doubting Young’s ability to lead the Hawks as the No. 1 option on the team.

Being a lottery pick, the expectation from Young is to become a top star in the league. For what it’s worth, Young has played well, at least as a point guard.

But it’s high time the Hawks realized Young doesn’t need to be the No. 1 option for the team to succeed. That’s what franchise legend Dominique Wilkins thinks.

“He doesn’t have to be if you have the right mix. As a great point guard, you’re going to always have the ball and the ability to take over games when you need to,” Wilkins told Esports Insider.

“He’s shown that time and time again. He has the ability to do that. You need that other superstar, and they’ve got superstars-in-the-making, but sometimes it takes a little time.

But Trae has the ability to do whatever he wants on the floor,” he added.

There’s no doubt that Trae has a great knack for getting his teammates going. After all, he led the league in assists this season.

In fact, this campaign marked the third straight season where Young has averaged more than 10.0 assists per game for the Hawks.

If the Hawks decide to finally allow Young to be a true point guard, it would require the team to add a talented star alongside the seven-year veteran.

Well, it’s hard to argue against the Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo’s fit alongside Trae.

“Man, that’s a blockbuster deal right there. Who wouldn’t want Giannis? I’d be lying if I said anything differently. Oh, man, it is a lot you’d have to give up to get a guy like that,” Wilkins said on the Hawks trying to trade for Giannis.

While Wilkins knows it wouldn’t be cheap to acquire the 2x NBA MVP, he admitted there’s not a single team in the league that wouldn’t try their luck at getting his signature on the dotted line.
